Dear Middleton School District Patrons,

I am writing you today to notify you of some changes in the scope of our 21st CCLC funded programs in Middleton Schools. In 2008-2013, 21ST CCLC grants funded programs at 3 different sites(Middleton Heights Elementary, Middleton Middle School and Middleton High School). These sites served more than 500 Middleton School District students in the past 5 years with more than 5,000 hours of supplemental education programs, with untold volumes of academic and social impact for participants.

This year two of our sites(Middleton Heights Elementary and Middleton High School) are going to transition off of 21st CCLC funding. The programs sustained at these two sites will continue in limited forms and information can be found by contacting the schools at the information listed below.

Middleton Middle School will continue with 21st CCLC funding in years 2013-2018. “Valhalla” is excited about the prospect of continuing to offer after school programming and if you are interested in learning more about “Valhalla” you can visit our blog at

Official Farewell!

School's out for the summer!  We have truly had an excellent year at the 21st Century Lounge (after-school program).  Lots of students have taken advantage of the Plato program to make up lost credits, recovering a total of more than 50 classes over the course of the year!  A huge thanks to the counseling staff for tirelessly combing through graduation requirements to see who needs what.  We repaired those stubborn pockets on the billiard table over and over, and someone even donated a new cue after ours started to show signs of wear.  Pretty much the only casualty this year was the ping pong table--thankfully it went down without any injuries to our participants.  We watched some movies, some Sponge Bob, played lots of computer games, did some homework, and just had an all-around great time.  Some students learned what propriety means, and maybe even why there's value in showing it.  Mr. Eck re-learned some algebra skills like using FOIL.  And so, it's with a little heaviness of heart that we say goodbye this time as the high school site of the 21st Century program will not be open next year.  We have enjoyed these last 2 years and thank all the participants and their families for the fun memories.  Goodbye for now, and may each participant's life be filled with success and happiness going forward!  Yours very truly, Mr. Eck

Year End

It always sneaks up on us!  The end of the school year is fast approaching:  Last day of service for the 21st Century Lounge (after-school program) will be Thursday, May 9.  This is also the last day to turn in completed PLATO courses for credit to be awarded.  PLATO COURSES MAY NOT BE CONTINUED NEXT YEAR.  All courses will be erased after school is out.  Also, last day to sign up for a Plato class will be May 3.  It has truly been a great year!  So far, more than 29 credits have been recovered through the students' efforts with Plato classes!  We have some really smart students here at Middleton who have taken advantage of a convenient, flexible option to make up for lost credits.  As we finish out the last year of the grant for the 21CCLC at the high school site this year, I think a lot of students have had meaningful experiences over the past five years.  The high school "after-school program" won't exist in the same format going forward, but it's been a fantastic place for learning, working, playing, lounging, socializing and just being a high-schooler.  Some students will be working feverishly (procrastinators!) for the next 11 days to finish their Plato classes or catch up or keep up or whatever.  To them I say, "Good luck!  I hope you achieve success!"

Happy Spring Break!

WOW!  10 consecutive days off!  I wish all of you an excellent spring break.  Make good, safe choices so we can all be in one piece and ready to learn again on April 1:)  Some exciting after-school program news:  our next (and final) community event with FREE PIZZA will be April 11 at 5:30.  Come and get some food and information about college and career planning!

33 Hours Left for Credit Recovery!

Lots of participants are taking advantage of the opportunity to make up lost credits with PLATO courses.  Many have signed up, worked hard, and completed their course.  Now they have a true grade on their transcript for that class!  What a relief!  I would love to be in the position of one of those students who worked efficiently to get a chore out of the way!  Well, not everyone is so motivated...some students signed up for their PLATO class last September and are still dragging their feet:(  Make of it what you will; to each his own!  Either way, all courses should be complete by the end of April, with the absolute LAST DAY I WILL PROCESS PLATO grades being Thursday, May 9.  Remember, you CANNOT finish a PLATO class after May 9--not in the summer, not next year.  So let's get 'em done!

4-day weekend!

The lounge/after-school program will be closed this Friday and Monday since school is out.  Maybe it will even be sunny...sunny enough for Mr. Eck to take down his Christmas lights!

PLATO Rush

We are having lots of interest in signing up for credit recovery through the PLATO program.  Please encourage your students to work as quickly as they can and finish those courses!  I'll be checking in with the students who attend regularly and work in the lab as much as possible.  It's not likely that this opportunity will be around next year, so please take advantage now.  All classes should be complete by the end of April, with extensions till May 9 possible ONLY if requested and approved by Mr. Eck.  Anything not finished by this date will have to be done during summer school or some other way!  Best of luck and here's to using time wisely:)
